Lady Fire Loses Tough Five Game Match
MONTGOMERY, Ala.--The Southeastern Lady Fire battled Bryan College to a five game match, Friday afternoon, in the first game of the 2011 Faulkner Women's Volleyball Tournament. Southeastern ended up on the losing end of a thrilling match, falling to Bryan 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 13-15).
The loss was even more devastating to Southeastern because they grabbed the first two sets with an awesome offensive attack. SEU ripped home 15 kills in game one, and then delivered 12 kills in game two while their defensive block forced Bryan into 14 errors in those two games combined.
In game three, the Lady Lions returned the favor to Southeastern, forcing nine attack errors while making 13 kills. Bryan had a similar total in game four, ending with 13 kills.
In the final set of the match, Bryan outhit Southeastern, 9-7, but five attack errors by Southeastern sealed their fate as SEU lost their second five set match of the season.
Southeastern had a terrific game defensively, as five players finished in double-digits in digs. Freshman, Katie Trenski, led Southeastern with 29 digs while Karina Mambuca finished with 21 digs. Allison Lewen added 19 digs, Tara McSherley ended with 17 digs, and Ruthie Glover chipped in with 14 digs.
Christi Limpert led the offense with 14 kills while Mambuca contributed 13 kills. Catherine Coston finished with 12 kills and senior Christine Dell banged home 11 kills.
McSherley led all players with 53 assists.
Bryan's Corrie Walker finished with a game high 41 digs. Taylor Fink dished out 40 assists and also played some nice defense, ending with 25 digs.
Southeastern is now 4-12 overall, and will play Southern Wesleyan University, later on Friday evening.
