Mathews, Wright Lead Fire to Top Five Finish at Lake Wales

LAKE WALES, Fla.--The Southeastern men's golf team opened up their 2011 fall schedule with a fourth place finish at the 18th Annual Webber Intercollegiate Tournament, Sunday and Monday, at the Lake Wales Country Club.

The Fire opened the tournament with a 291, but after a second round of 288, Southeastern moved into a tie for second place with a two round total of 579. In the final round, Southeastern shot a 294 to slip back to fourth place and finish the tournament with a three round total of 873.

Northwood University won the tournament with a 859 (287-279-292) followed by Coastal College of Georgia at 868 (286-293-289). St. Thomas University used a final round of 285 to surpass SEU, and finish the tournament with an 871 (289-297-285). Host college, Webber International, rounded out the top five with a 879 (298-291-290).

Elrick Van Eck, of Northwood, won the individual medalist with a 210 (71-69-70). Omar Tejeira of St. Thomas, placed second with a 212 (70-73-69). Coastal Georgia's Dylan Freeman, had the low round of the tournament on Sunday, posting a first round 68.

Individually for Southeastern, Drew Mathews, tied for fifth place overall after firing a three round 215. Mathews opened the tournament with a one under par, 70, placing him in a tie for third place. After a second round 73, the senior from nearby Winter Haven shot a 72 in the final round to pick up his first top five finish of the season.

Newcombers, Steven Wright and Jordan Smith, had great showings in their first tournament appearances for Southeastern. Wright tied for seventh place with a three over par 216 (72-71-73), including an even par second round. Smith fired the lowest round for a SEU player in the tournament, a 69 in round two. He ended tied for 10th place, at five over for the tournament (74-69-75-218).

Two other newcombers, J.D. Cobb and Jeff Wattles, both tied for 28th place. Cobb's best round was a 74 on Monday while Wattles shot a 72 in the second round.

Freshman, Austin Lee, tied for 40th place after totalling a 227 (74-80-73) while senior Matthew Jenkinson finished the tournament strong with a final round 73. Jenkinson ended with a 232 (77-82-73).

Other SEU finishers include; Gabriel Gomez 234 (78-79-77), Juan Arenas (85-76-81) and Steven Fowler (76-88-82).

Southeastern will next compete in the Thomas University Invitational, October 2-4, in Valdosta, Ga.
