Late Second Half Goal Lifts Lady Fire Past Warner, 2-1
September 24, 2011
Freshman, Suzy Bondy, Scores Game Winner
LAKE WALES, Fla.--The Southeastern Lady Fire broke through with a big win, Saturday evening, defeating Polk County rivals Warner University, 2-1.
Since joining the Sun Conference in 2009, Southeastern and Warner have played three times, with each game being decided by just one goal. In 2009, Southeastern defeated the Lady Royals, 2-1, and in 2010 Warner scored a late second half goal to shutout Southeastern, 1-0.
Saturday's game would see more of the same between these two rivals.
All-Conference selection a year ago, Jessica Crowe, put the Lady Fire on the board first just seven minutes in on a pass from Suzy Bondy.
Both teams battled evenly from that point on, until Warner was able to tie the score before the half on a goal by Tara Fadenrecht with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. Warner's Katie Mortenson assisted on the play.
Warner was able to outshoot Southeastern 15-8 for the game, but Lady Fire goal keeper, Karleigh Smoak, made eight big saves in the game to keep the score tied, 1-1.
Then, Bondy would score the game winner with just 13 minutes to play in regulation, tallying her second goal of the season. Bondy finished with three points in the game.
Southeastern improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action. They will travel to play Northwood University, Thursday afternoon, for another important conference game.
