Bees Hold Off Late Surge By Fire

SEU Opens Conference Play With 2-1 Loss to SCAD

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla.--The Southeastern men's soccer team opened up their 2011 conference schedule, Thursday night, in front of 650 rowdy faithful Fire fans at the SEU Soccer Complex. The fans were treated to a wonderful game that saw visiting Savannah College of Art & Design win a close match, 2-1.

SCAD (1-4, 1-0) scored the only goal of the first half when Brinton Nute headed a ball past Fire goal keeper, Bo Giles, at the 19 minute mark. SCAD's Ryan Middleton chipped a ball to the front of the SEU net where Nute redirected the ball past Giles for the first strike of the game.

Southeastern grabbed some momentum near the end of the half when it appeared the Bees would be extending their narrow 1-0 lead. Facing a penalty kick with just under 10 minutes to play in the half, Giles blocked the attempt from Jose Izurieta-Herrera to keep the score, 1-0.

The first half was evenly played, as Southeastern outshot the Bees, 12-10.

But, the Bees would sting quickly in the second half, grabbing a 2-0 advantage when Izurieta-Herrera struck a shot from the right side some 30 feet from the goal, new Fire goal keeper David Danahy, had a tough time handling the shot and allowed a rebound where SCAD's Tibo Rocheblave banged the rebound home for a score.

Southeastern (1-2, 0-1) however refused to go down quietly, dominating the possession in the second half and earning quality scoring chances.

Finally, the Fire broke through with just over five minutes to play in regulation, as Knox Strawbridge redirected a free kick from Matthew Sandford to make the score 2-1.

Strawbridge has earned a point in all three games so far this season, and has two goals and two assists on the young season.

The Bees did a nice job down the stretch clearing the ball, and keeping the Fire away from tying the score as they were outshot 26-16 for the contest.

SCAD goal keeper, Ross Faulds, made some huge saves in the second half, and finished with nine saves on the night.

SEU will travel to Naples, Fla., to take on Ave Maria University, Saturday afternoon, for another important conference game. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
