Lady Fire Earns First Victory of Season

SEU Falls to University of Mobile in Match One

MOBILE, Ala.--The Southeastern Lady Fire volleyball team earned their first victory of the 2011 season, Saturday, defeating Talladega College in three games (25-14, 25-10, 25-9).
The victory was much needed for Southeastern as they prevented starting the season 0-3. SEU lost to Spring Hill College on Friday night, before falling to the University of Mobile in four games (25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 24-26) earlier on Saturday.
As a team, Southeastern banged home 40 kills in the match, compared to just 15 kills for Talladega.
Sophomore, Karina Mambuca, led the Lady Fire offense with 11 kills and three aces. Freshman, Catherine Coston, added nine kills as she went 9-of-14 on attacks.
Tara McSherley dished out 16 assists and led the Lady Fire defensively with nine digs.
Mambuca and Coston both chipped in with seven digs along with freshman Lindsey Fleming.
After grabbing game one versus Mobile, Southeastern dropped the next three sets, including a dramatic 24-26 loss in game four.
Southeastern led the final set, 20-17, before the Lady Rams rallied for the next three points to tie the score, 20-20. From that point forward their was five lead changes and four ties in the set before Mobile scored the final two points to break a 24-24 tie.
Mobile outhit Southeastern 17-9 in game four, and 56-40 overall for the match.
Coston was the Lady Fire's leading hitter with 13 kills, and also led the team defensively with 12 digs.
Mambuca chipped in with seven kills, 10 digs, and two solo blocks. Morgan Lehman added eight kills while McSherley dished out 17 assists and 10 digs.
Southeastern (2-1) will next host Colorado Christian University, Thursday evening, for their home season opener. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
